There's no gentle opener for either of these two this year. NC State and Virginia kick off the 2026 season against each other on a neutral field in Brazil, and both programs arrive with something to prove — just from opposite directions.

The setup

Virginia is coming off the best season in program memory: 11 wins, a second straight ACC championship game appearance, and the school's first ranked finish in 21 years. Only an upset loss to Duke in the ACC title game kept the Cavaliers out of the College Football Playoff. Head coach Tony Elliott, who won just 11 games combined in his first three seasons in Charlottesville, has the program in a different stratosphere now — and another strong transfer portal class has expectations set on returning to the ACC title mix.

NC State is asking a more familiar question. Under Dave Doeren, now in his 14th season, the Wolfpack have spent the better part of a decade flirting with a breakthrough — 10-win-season talk has been the offseason headline in 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023, without ever quite arriving. Last year's 8-5 finish, capped by overcoming slow starts in five of their final games, sets up the same debate again: is this finally the step forward, or is NC State ticketed for another year in the sport's middle class?

These two actually met last September, with NC State winning a shootout in Raleigh, 35-31. That result means almost nothing here — both rosters have turned over significantly since.

What's different this time

Virginia's calling card in 2025 was Chandler Morris slinging it around for 3,000 yards, J'Mari Taylor running for 1,000, and three different receivers topping 500 receiving yards. All of it is gone. Missouri transfer Beau Pribula steps in at quarterback after a dislocated ankle ended his 2025 season early, throwing to a receiving corps that's almost entirely unproven, behind a running back competition between three transfers and a holdover. The one thing that hasn't changed is the offensive line, anchored by all-ACC contenders Noah Josey and McKale Boley — and an experienced, nationally elite defense that returns most of its key pieces.

NC State's story is nearly the inverse. Quarterback CJ Bailey — who many assumed would test the transfer portal after 2025 — was retained, giving the Wolfpack a rare year of continuity at the position most programs would kill for. Around him, running back Duke Scott (196 yards in a single game against Georgia Tech last year) and a retooled receiving corps led by Miami transfer JoJo Trader give NC State a real chance to be a functional, if unspectacular, offense. The defense is the bigger question: it allowed 118 explosive plays and racked up 137 missed or broken tackles a year ago, and while the program brought in reinforcements at cornerback and along the defensive line, last season's issues were more about execution than talent.

By the numbers (2025 season)

A word on these numbers before we use them: they're final 2025 statistics, and given how much both rosters have turned over — especially Virginia's offense — they should be read as a loose starting point, not gospel. They'll matter a lot more in three or four weeks, once both teams have real 2026 tape.

The gap that stands out: Virginia's defense finished 2025 as one of the best third-down units in the country (2nd nationally, allowing conversions on just 28% of attempts), while NC State's defense was one of the worst at exactly that — 126th nationally, and 130th against the pass specifically. Whatever uncertainty exists around Virginia's rebuilt passing attack, it's lining up against the part of NC State's defense that struggled most a year ago.

The matchup to watch

This game turns on one question: can NC State's offense, which returns its starting quarterback and its best skill players, produce enough against a Virginia defense that was elite on money downs — while Virginia's brand-new passing game tries to find its footing against a Wolfpack secondary that had real trouble getting off the field on third down all of last season?

Virginia's continuity is almost entirely on defense; NC State's is almost entirely on offense. That split is what makes this such an interesting opener — it's not one good team against one bad team, it's two programs whose strengths and weaknesses happen to line up against each other almost perfectly.

Blending each team's 2025 scoring average against the opponent's scoring defense points to a competitive game (Virginia's model number comes out closer to 29, NC State's closer to 25), but Virginia gets the nod beyond that raw math for two reasons: its defense is the more proven, more complete unit heading into Week 1, and it's defending exactly the area — third downs and the pass — where NC State was most vulnerable last season. A new quarterback and a shuffled receiving corps make Virginia's passing floor uncertain, but the surrounding cast (line, defense, program trajectory) gives them the wider margin for error in a season opener.
